Volunteer Hero Mick Symanski

🏆🇺🇸 The Story of Mick Szymanski: A Life Built on Service 🇺🇸🏆
Some people spend a lifetime asking what their community can do for them. Mick Szymanski spent a lifetime asking what he could do for his community.
Born and raised in Manistee, Mick first answered the call to serve through military service. After that, he and his wife dedicated their careers to the Department of Defense, where Mick spent 34 years working in community and hospitality programs focused on supporting others. For many people, retirement would have been the finish line. For Mick, it was simply the beginning of a new chapter of service.

When he returned home to Manistee, he didn’t slow down. He accelerated.
Mick became involved in the Planning Commission and Housing Commission, helping shape the future of his hometown. He joined Habitat for Humanity to help families build stronger futures. He supported veterans through the American Legion and United Veterans Council. He strengthened civic life through the Lions Club and Knights of Columbus. He became a leader in community organizations, charitable efforts, and local improvement projects. His fingerprints can be found on countless efforts that have made Manistee a stronger, kinder, and more connected place.
That’s why he has been nominated for the 2026 Community Champion Award—an honor recognizing people who dedicate themselves to improving the lives of others.
What makes Mick’s story so inspiring isn’t one single achievement. It’s the consistency of his character. Year after year. Organization after organization. Project after project. He keeps showing up.
He believes community is about creating a safe and supportive environment where people build relationships, work together, and lift each other up. He encourages young people to volunteer, bring fresh ideas, and become active in shaping the future. He often says the real champions are the public servants and volunteers working every day to help others—yet his humility is exactly what makes him such a remarkable leader.
